  1. Monster Hunter's Fate in the West

    23 December 2011 - 12:29 AM

Christian Svensson's thoughts on Monster Hunter and how it relates to the west.

He hopes it'll be as big as most mainstream titles one day. It's kinda hard to do that when you aren't releasing anything here. We are 0 and 5 with recent Monster Hunter games (The Re-release of G, TriG, P3, P3 HD, and Poka Poka Airu Mura). Step it up, CAPCOM.

EDIT: 0 and 6, actually. There's an Japan-exclusive iPhone/Android game releasing at the end of the year: Monster Hunter: Phantom Island Voyage
  2. Vs. Amatsumagatsuchi!

    19 December 2011 - 04:17 PM

    Time: 9:00 AM

The rain had been falling for over a week straight in Yukumo. The flooding was beginning to get severe, with the river near the farm having swelled to three times its original height. The river had completely engulf the farm at this point, and was only a scant few hours from overflowing into the town, which would naturally be a serious problem. The culprit could be seen flying over a nearby mountaintop, slowly drifting back and forth. It would occasionally dip down to ground level for a few moments, only to return back to its position above the mountain.

As far as anyone could tell, Amatsumagatsuchi hadn't done anything but that since it arrived. Whatever it was doing was of no concern to the village though. The Yukumo Hunter's Guild branch decided to rid themselves of this menace by calling in any and all elite Hunters available. Today was the day they would go to meet, and hopefully kill, the storm god.
    --

OOC: Feel free to pick anywhere to be in Yukumo Village, as long as you aren't in the farm (Due to the aforementioned flooding).
  3. Vs. Series Part II: Versus the Storm God

    17 December 2011 - 03:04 AM

    Reward: 100,000z EACH
    Contract Fee: 2,000z
Requirements: Hunter Rank 6 and above
    Additional Notes:
The Hunters Guild will be relaxing the limit on hunters for this battle. We need each and every capable hunter in this fight!

Amatsumagatsuchi has been sighted in a nearby mountain range, causing torrential downpours, landslides, and severe flooding. Loss of life has been high, and will only continue to climb as long as the dragon is alive. End the beast, before we all drown!

Be aware of the hazards of the mud and rain, footing may be very loose. It wouldn't do for a hunter of your caliber to die from falling off a mountain side.

    - Hunter's Guild, Yukumo Branch

"Anyone able and willing, we need you!"

    Name:
    Armor:
Weapon (will allow 2, DS counts as 2. Element is important, status weapons are allowed):
    Backstory (optional):

For every buff (d20 +1) on one of these stats, it must follow with a debuff (d20 -1). There is no restriction on debuffs. It is assumed default for any non-buffed stat (d20 +/-0).

    Speed (Affects evasion)
    Attack (Affects weapon damage)
Defense (Comes into play when hit, opposing attack minus this die roll = damage)
Luck (Jack of all trades, may provide a boost when you need it. Also plays a roll if your HP hits zero.)
Health( Default is 100, Every +1 adds 10)

Maximum of +10 in any stat, barring HP which is +5 max.

Weapons that can guard (SnS, GS, Both lance variants, Shielded BGs) make an attack roll for the guard effectiveness.

All players get 10 potions, which restore 20 HP each.

This RPG uses MH Physics. Yes, you can fall long distances without too much trouble, and yes you can take a heavy hit and have a good chance of survival. However, there are limits, as there always are.

    --
    Weapons:
Each weapon has different abilities, ranging from extra power or more speed.

Great Sword: Gains an automatic +2 to all damage rolls, as well as a +1 to all guard rolls. 1 attack per round.

Switch Axe: Gains +2 to all damage rolls, cannot guard. Can shift to Sword Mode for +3 damage and -1 accuracy for 3 rounds. Capable of a burst attack that delivers +10 on damage roll but -4 on accuracy. 2 attacks in Axe mode, 3 attacks in sword mode per round.

Hammer: Gains an automatic +3 to all damage rolls, but cannot guard. 1 attack per round.

Longsword: Automatic +2 to all damage rolls, but cannot guard. 2 attacks per round.

Lance: +1 to damage rolls, and gains +4 when guarding...at the cost of -2 to speed when it is the user's active weapon. User can charge the target for +5 attack at the expense of accuracy (-5). 2 attacks per round.

Gunlance: +2 to all damage rolls, +3 when guarding. -2 speed when active weapon. Can shell the opponent (bypasses defense) at a severe penalty to accuracy (-8). Wyvern Fire similarly is powerful (+10 to attack) but costs the user mobility (-5 to all movement related rolls, cannot guard or evade during attack).

Hunting Horn: Can play songs based on its note ability (See MH Wiki for info). 2 notes or 1 attack per round.

SnS:Gains +2 to all evasion rolls and +1 to all guard rolls. 3 attacks per round.

DS: +2 to all evasion rolls, can demonize for +2 on damage rolls at the cost of -2 accuracy. 4 attacks per round

Bow: +2 Accuracy to all attacks, can equip various toxins. 1 Attack per round.

Light Bowgun: +3 accuracy to all attacks, can have 5 different shot types. 3 attacks per round. Can load 5 of all normal/Pierce/Pellet/Element shots. Can load 2 Status S. Can load only 1 Explosive at a time. 1 turn reload.

Medium Bowgun: +2 accuracy and +2 damage to all attacks, can have 5 different shot types. 2 attacks per round. Can load 6 of all normal/Pierce/Pellet/Element shots. Can load 2 Status S. or 2 Explosive S at a time. 1 turn reload.

Heavy Bowgun: +1 accuracy and +5 damage to all attacks, can have 5 different shot types. 1 attack per round. Can load 7 of all normal/Pierce/Pellet/Element shots. Can load 3 Status S or 2 Explosive S at a time. 2 turn reload.

Just to clarify, you can only have 1 shot type loaded. If you want to load a different type while still using something, see Reload Time.

    Bowgun Shot Types

    • Normal S: Default Stats
    • Pellet S: +2 attacks per round, -1 damage
    • Crag S: +5 damage, - 2 accuracy
    • Clust S: +3 attacks, + 5 damage, - 5 Accuracy
    • Rolls are as follows: 1-6: 1 bomblet hits target, 2 hit allies. 7-12: 2 hit target, 1 hits ally. 13+: All bomblets on target
    • Pierce S: +2 attacks, + 1 Damage, -1 accuracy
    • Status S: Target makes a roll against the type of Status (Health against Poison, Luck against Para, and Defense against Sleep). If the roll succeeds, no status takes effect. If the target fails the roll, see Status Effects.
    • Element S: See Normal S for Fire/Water S, Pierce for all others. Gains Bonus multiplier/Damage Penalty, depending on shot type.

Custom Weapon: Speak to me about it.
    --
    Status Effects:
Poison causes 10-15 damage a turn for 5 turns, modified by Luck. This damage ignores any kind of damage reduction.

Para causes the target to be absolutely immobile for 3 turns. This has a diminishing effect, so successive paralysis has a lesser effect. It will always, however, work for at least 1 turn.

Sleep causes the target to fall asleep for either 4 turns, or until hit. The first attack to hit ignores the target's Defense. Sleep follows the same reduction in efficiency Para S does. Sleeping targets can also be kicked awake for no damage.

    --

    Items:
Items are as follows, you can have 2.

Shock Trap: Immobilizes target that steps on it for 3 turns. The bolts are more or less invisible, so no real hiding is required. Emphasis on steps. A target that floats over a trap will not activate it. Can be destroyed by an attack, max of 1. Diminishing Effect for every trap laid, most Elder Dragons are immune to the weak pulses the trap puts out.

Pitfall: See Above, but instead of immobilizing, target thrashes around for 3 turns. Most Elder Dragons are too large for this kind of trap, and therefore trip it with no ill effects. Max 1, can be destroyed by an attack.

Smoke Bomb: Obscures everything in the smoke cloud, making it difficult to see and hit anything (All attacks directed into, from, or through smoke could: -8 Acc). Max of 5, lasts for 4 turns or until blown away (Wind, beating of wings, ect.).

Poison Smoke Bomb: Instantly poisons target that is directly in the smoke cloud (Includes hunters/user), but inflicts very weak poison as a result (1-5 damage per turn, modified by luck (Meaning it could in fact deal more than 5 or less than 1). Poison Damage ignores defense.) Max of 5

Flash Bombs: When thrown in front of the target, Target makes an evade check at d20-10. If successful, target is unaffected. If failed, the target is blinded for 4 turns, and suffers -15 accuracy for the duration. Diminishing effect, will eventually have no effect. 3 max.

Throwing Knives: Nice for some easy ranged damage. d20+(Str/4) = results for Throwing Knives. 10 max.
Can apply various poisons to knives (Must specify type of throwing knife), see Status Effects.

    Example Character:

    Name: Redshirt McCannonfodder
    Armor: Red Guild
Weapon: Iron Sword (SnS), Hunter's Bow (Bow)
Backstory: Born with a sneaking suspicion that he would be killed needlessly and for no reason other than to make more experienced people look good.

    Stats:
    Speed -2
    Attack +2
    Defense -5
    Luck +0
    Health +0
    --

All monsters are allowed for armor/weapons, barring Amatsu's equipment.

Also, be aware. As those who were in the Rukodiora RP know, I will not pull punches. Be cautious when you fight.

  4. S.O.P.A

    18 November 2011 - 12:52 AM

S.O.P.A is the Stop Online Piracy Act. It is currently running it's way through Congress, and has a very realistic chance of passing. In essence, it gives the Entertainment Industry the power to simply shut down websites they accuse of piracy and/or counterfeiting, or anything else the Entertainment Industry accuses of such. This includes websites such as Facebook, Youtube, Tumblr, DeviantArt, Reddit and many, MANY others.

This also includes Search Engines such as Google or Yahoo.

    Here's a more in-depth description:

I implore all of you to sign the petition against this.

    Link to the Petition: http://act.demandpro...JTkqV4&rd=1&t=2

Link to write your congressperson: https://writerep.hou...p/welcome.shtml

Remember, the Entertainment Industry are the people who sue 12 year olds using methods meant for big companies. If they're allowed to pass this...we Americans can pretty much kiss the internet goodbye.
  5. Ace Combat: Assault Horizon

    12 October 2011 - 07:18 PM

So, being a long time fan of the Ace Combat series, I wanted to pick this up. I had high hopes, because they've been very good games (for the most part). Excitement, storyline, beautiful planes (Both fictional and real), the list goes on.

Imagine my shock when on the cover of the game itself, it's advertised as "Call of Duty of the air". I was immediately suspicious, but was hopeful regardless. Pop it in, and play the first mission, and notice some...irritating things, along with some good.

First of all, the game looks real pretty. Explosions are bright, the planes reflect sunlight from their canopies, the whole shebang. Afterburners are nice to look at, which encourages me to move faster.

The "Steel Carnage" destruction physics are cool too. Hitting a plane with a missile and watching it tear apart is always awesome, and occasionally you'll even see the pilot tumble out of the ruined cockpit. Wings will rip off, planes will shear in half, even tanks and other ground vehicles are subject to it.

Newly added is the ability to completely customize colors for each and every aircraft. While only useable in online and Free Mission mode, it nonetheless adds something many players have wanted for a while.

    Now, the bad.

A new feature was added, called DogFighting Mode, henceforth known as DFM.

This feature renders it nearly IMPOSSIBLE to shoot enemy planes down without it. Bombers, for example, will take upwards of 10 missiles without it, but as soon as you engage DFM, it's suddenly 4. It's claimed that the short distance allows for better locking, but you can manually fly that close with no change in damage.

Other planes will perform impossible maneuvers, such as COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP AND HOVERING to get you out from behind them, as long as you're NOT in DFM. Engage it, and the fighter will take you around a pre-programed path around the level. Some of them, labeled TARGET_LEAD, will be invincible until a certain something happens in the level. Of course, to trigger this, you need to be in DFM.

Next is "Anti-Surface Maneuver" (ASM). This is slightly more bearable, except if you don't use it, ground targets will nearly instantly kill you. Of course, this is allowed to happen because of my next gripe:

Regenerating Health. Ace Combat DOES NOT NEED THIS. End of story. The only reason it was seemingly added for is to allow the AI to cheat further.

Take this example: I am assaulting an Aircraft Carrier in an A-10. I make a pass, and start getting pelted with AA fire. No big deal, I pull away, and see the gunfire lagging behind me, to the point where it would be easier for them to just circle the guns the other way to hit me...which they still are, by the way. That's right, I am being hit by bullets that are going the opposite direction. I am still on this mission as of writing this, because I literally cannot find a way to stop being hit.

Next Gripe: Perks. Ace Combat has introduced perks for Online and Free Mission modes. These are things such as firepower upgrades for your Machine Gun or Missiles, to defense upgrades. Nothing is there that wouldn't be considered bog-standard in an FPS. You can have 5 equipped at once, and one can be selected and applied to your entire squadron. I haven't tested it much, as I'm avoiding Multiplayer until I finish the Campaign.

One More: They've done away with plane selection, as far as I'm aware. They give you a handful to pick at the start of the mission. You cannot purchase planes, nor can you take whatever you want. Like HAWX II, regardless of what you have unlocked, you only have access to a small selection at any given time.

Team Aces has taken away virtually everything that has made Ace Combat, Ace Combat. This game should be avoided, and if this is the future of Ace Combat...it should have died with Joint Assault.
