Public Speaking

I had the opportunity last night to do a 2nd "speaker meeting". The first time I did it, (last November) there were about 50 people, and I was a tad nervous at first, and did an ok. Last night there were about 30 people, I wasn't nervous AT ALL and I thought I did (and was told afterward that I did) great.
I've seen a few statistics where speaking in public is the number one fear - even passing up death and heights.
Anyone else have any good, bad, ugly experience with this?

It's not that hard, I was valedictorian of my sophomore year and had to give some speech about motivation. I found that a complete oxymoron. XD I just tuned everyone out and thought I was talking to my family.
I just read my older sis' speech cause she wasn't valedictorian of her year. Sucks cause she was .2 behind in the seniors.

In College though, I found it much, much easier. I always struggled to bring up the confidence to do it because I was ALWAYS more worried about what might happen whilst I was talking, such as:
-People laughing
-Not paying attention
-Getting my words mixed up
-Being considered "boring"
Things like that. I didn't want to look like a fool in front of these people, and that was what worried me more than actually standing up and talking.
I had to give a presentation about Communication Technologies and Job Perspectives the other month. We only had to be up at the front for a maximum of two minutes, but that ALWAYS feels a hell of a lot longer than two minutes when you're actually up there.
Anyway, I had no problems, because I knew what I was doing to say, had researched about it so nobody could catch me out and the lecturer (who was one of my favourites) said I'd done really well.
It's always the fear that makes you nervous more than standing up and talking.

be it random speech against 100+ peoples for 10 minutes, I'd rather do the highest bungee jumping.

What I meant was more people were afraid of speaking in public, then they were afraid of death or heights.

I've heard several people mention talking for a few minutes or whatnot.
My speaker meetings I did, the first one I talked for an hour. The 2nd, about 40 minutes. >_<'

That's a considerable length of time. A lot of people are nervous about talking for a few minutes, imagine doing it for that long...
I could do it if I had researched and knew exactly what I was going to say and how

Every time I've done one I've always been frozen in fear moments before I actually carry it out. Despite that though I have always managed to suck it up and just go with it.
On one occasion I remember doing a presentation where I was sure I was shivering in fear during the entire presentation, however by the end of it nobody actually noticed how nervous I was (In fact they were complimenting me for being so calm and composed during the presentation). I have even done a presentation on material that I am completely unfamiliar with and by the end of it the audience was pretty convinced that I knew what I was talking about even though I don't know anything about it.
There are two things I generally worry about whenever I have to do public speaking. One is that I'm worried about how my audience will react to my presentation/speech. Another is that I worry about how the presentation/speech itself will go and whether or not I will screw up doing it.

But for girls its way easier, smile and look cute then the emphasis won't be on our speech but rather looks. XP

The longest speaking I have done was somewhere around 20-30 minutes, but that was just in front of my class and teacher.
I guess another thing I could add to this would be preforming a dance in front of 400 people. now THAT was terrifying for me.

Yeah, I kind of figured you were the outspoken type. Choloutgoing. And I'm only shy in real life. Put me behind a screen and I transform into my alter-ego, who kicks bubblegum and chews @$$. Wait...
