10 Potions
10 Mega Potions
10 Herbs
5 Hot + Cool Drinks
1 Shock Trap
Tranq Bombs
20 Whetstone
Power Talon
Armour Talon
Power Charm
Armour Charm
Obviously, that changes depending on the quest but I never take Lifepowders/Seeds/buffs. Of course, if I were using a gun I'd be stocked up on ammo and the combines to make more. As for food, I always eat for Health +50 and Stamina +50. If I can't get that then I just don't eat. The reason I keep my inventory like this is because it covers every quest I may embark on. I never remove the Hot/Cool Drinks from my inventory, even if I don't need them as that way I always know I have some.
As for the materials to make these items, check here.

Every quest I have at least:
That fills up the first two pages of inventory. Then I take other things as the situation warrants (drinks, antidote, special meats, flash/sonic, berries/seeds etc..) The only real exceptions to the list above are when mining or when fighting Alatreon. Mining is simple... bring some potions, cool drink, and as many pick axes as you can carry.
Fighting Alatreon is not as simple and usually looks like this:
Remember that half of being a solid hunter is being properly prepared.

10x Potion
10x Mega Potion
2x Maxpotion
3x Lifepowder
1x Armor Charm
1x Armor Talon
1x Power Charm
1x Power Talon
5x Flashbomb
2x Trap Tool (to mix 2 more Shock Traps)
2x Thunderbug (to mix 2 more Shock Traps)
1x Shock Trap
1x Pitfall Trap
8x Tranqbomb
20x Whetstone (except when gunning)
5x Mega Pickaxe
10x Well-Done Steak
Optional:
Depends on what monster i fight really, and what armor set i use. For example when using full Barioth+ set i wont need Hot Drinks because of Cold Cancel HI)
A few examples (not all) and when i use them:
10x Immunimizer (Alatreon when gunning/Jhen Mohran when GSing)
5x Hot Drink (Thundra/Sandyplains)
5x Cool Drink (Sandyplains/Volcano/Alatreon)
10x Sonic Bomb (Diablos)
10x Drugged Meat (Jho)
10x Tringed Meat (Jho)
2x BBl+ (Jho)
Combo Books 1-5 (Ala gunning)
Cleanser (barioth)
Antidotes (Gigginox/Rathian/Rathalos)
Dungbombs (Jho/Gigginox/2x Diablos cause i hate fighting 2 at the same time)
What i never use are Paintballs and Mega Dash Juices. My friend i play with every day has the Autotracker skill so he always tells me where the monster left is i didn't see him flyaway myself (shadows ftw) and most monsters i know their spawning area out of my head so Paintballs are useless for me. Mega Dash Juice kill the fun of the game for me, the trick that makes it hard sometime is when you run out of Stamina in a heated battle. Mega Dash Juice just kills the purpose of Stamina and makes you able to run dodge and block unlimited for a short period...no fun in that, if you are a real Monster Hunter and have any pride do without it.

And while you are at it, a real hunter shouldn't use traps, bombs, flashes/sonics ... heck, might was well go without whetstones, potions, or armor too
Though really, I tend to agree and I only use dash juices when hammering Alatreon... I mean after you have fought it a hundred times the challenge is gone anyways. In reality, I only use traps for captures, only use bombs when other hunters want to bomb, and only use flashes to knock Alatreon out of the sky. Tricks are for kids

I tend to only use traps for tailcutting or when farming other parts like diablos horns (sonic bomb + flash is better though). I always carry these things with me for emergancy mostly, its good to flash or trap a mob when whole team is low on health and would get killed otherwise if the monster isn't stopped.
