That shield also recovers health when consumed.

I don't want to consume my shield.
Its sad when I try to do that.

Side note, when the shield consumes food, there appears to be a waste product a couple hours later...

My shield seems to do this quite frequently. Along with the constant noises it makes when roused

Is there a remedy for this

That's not fair, you're dual-wielding with a Two-handed sword.

That's not a shield, that's a ranged attack weapon.
You fling it and it destroys.
