So here in Asia, or at least large parts of it, K-Pop is dominating everything. Or so I am made to think by the media here. In any event, is K-Pop making any sort of splash out west? I ask because around here there is a general inundation of it but when I turn to western pages for entertainment trends it is the same ol hollywood epic fail train wreck of life article that dominates.
Still the media is the media and I would like to get some feedback from people with the ears to the real freaking earth on this. Is K-Pop something you listen to an those around you listen to or mention? Is it fringe? Does it even register? The only group I am aware of that is sorta trendy out west is 2NE1. But they are total unknowns back here.
Your input is greatly appreciated.

You and maybe this friend I have that's in Japanese club are the only two people I've ever heard (or read) say "K-pop"

I guess some teens who are into anime probably listen to it here
and Asian kids who just absorb everything that Japan likes.
Nothing about it here in the media though.

Where I live, nobody with interests unrelated to anime, J-pop, J-rock, and so forth has even heard of K-pop, with exception to SNSD, which has received a little hype on the major media channels like E! and so forth (which is usually on at my grandmother's house), and 2NE1, which has marginal fringe popularity(to my knowledge), though mostly nobody bothers to even look up the lyrics. I can't speak for the coasts, but central US has nothing to do with korea or it's popular culture. They're only vaguely aware of north korea being 'bad guys', and I won't go any further into that bag.

Heh heh, it is funny you say that because the closest comparison I can make is that this stuff is like New Kids on the Block from back in the day. It is pop and appeals to wide segment here in Asia but the core audience is definitely teens. Here though it is a little different from a cultural perspective. You won't get beat up for listening to it. Stuff like 2NE1 has 0 appeal here but the other more "cutesy" stuff does.
Though I confess I do enjoy this stuff. Listening to current pop from back home (the Lady Gagas of our time) just makes me cringe. This stuff feels about 10 years behind and doesn't try to dig deeeeep into the garbage bin to get a beat out.
Still thanks for the feed back. Every so often I need to keep up with stuff being so far away from everything now.
