"Right, everyone stop. Calm down. The theory going around at the minute is that the 'trailer' that's been released is little more than a concept trailer designed simply to show new ideas for next game. Evidence for this is the incredibly unpolished look of the trailer - seriously, Capcom Presents is just white text in what I think may be Times New Roman, FFS - and the fact the environment looks like crap. They just cobbled anything together (hence Tigrex and Rathalos, the flagship monsters everyone will recognise) and tried to show off the new ideas they've had. No-one is saying this is exactly how they'll look when the game is released for real. Hell, MH4 is so early in its development stage they might not even keep some of these ideas.
With this in mind, let's look at the 'new ideas' showcased in the trailer:
- Wide-open expansive environment. Not a fan personally, I feel the individual area system allows for more variety from a single environment, but some people will probably like it.
- More varied ground. Did you see the hunter running up the hill to get away from the Tigrex? This could make some areas feel more realistic, IMO.
- Platforming. OK, I don't know what they're thinking here. Who'd be doing that when they could be fighting a monster? It might make some area exploration more fun, I suppose.
- Climbing. No-one liked climbing in any previous game, it's boring and time consuming. Maybe improvements to it will make it worthwhile.
- Destructible environments. Not new, but it's an idea I've loved and so far it's not been great. You know the rocks in Volcano, Area... 7? They just practically dissolve when hit by a random monster attack, not really realistic at all. Maybe it'll be better by MH4.
Of much greater interest was the collapsing floor (when Tigrex gets dumped over the edge into the pit). If it happens rarely enough in game, it could really add excitement to a fight.
- Jumping on the back of a monster. NO NO NO NO NONONONONO. This isn't Dragon's Dogma Capcom, throw this idea out the window ASAP please.
So, once we accept that the 'trailer' isn't truly representative of the game in any meaningful way, the future looks much brighter. My biggest issue at the minute is that it's only confirmed for THE FUCKING 3DS, but if it's also out on the Vita (or, god forbid, an actual home console) I'll be really quite pleased."
