Aaarara. Swords are awesome. Not going to wax philosophical about their beauty, or sappy stuff like that. Here's the deal. Post the swords you think are awesome, that actually exist, that you would want to have. I know you want a sword, because swords are awesome.

I myself am caught between the 1.Gladius and the 2.Jian. They're both adaptable, balanced, dual edged swords with great cutting, chopping and stabbing ability. To me, they are the epitome of functionality in a non-disposable bladed weapon. The first is heavier, balanced around lethal mid-range fighting. The second is slimmer, more elegant, and more prone to fencing. Also utilized in tai chi. Both were used to great success for very long durations.

Now, what kind of swords are you guys into? I'm expecting a lot of katana talk @.@ A bit fond of the nodachi, myself.

Any sword to me is a beauty my friend :D

My personal favorites however are katanas, or any sword with a creative design and great detail carved into them. I like to design swords and melee weapons myself :D

Swords are baddass I would have one if I was old enough but I would choose either a Jain type of sword or a Friggen Claymore

Being a Chinese, I'll pick the Jian. (It is from China after all(?).)

I've seen it used in many dramas on TV, although flashy but they are usually practical in combat.

i actually own a movie prop katana, but i'm more of a knife person.

hmm, i think the south east asian swords like the bolo and keris are excellent and have a lot of history of war and tradition. guloks/goloks looks ike what an orc would use for those LoTR fans.
were for executions and limb chopping for criminals.

kukris, are knives but are great specially when you know the REAL ones are made from old truck springs, such resourcefulness.

EDIT:

oh wait, this was the sword i was thinking that looked like from LoTR

according to the website i got it from, that was the sword type that took down Magellan.

NOOOoooo. Frostmourne is only cool because it steals souls. It's just a highly decorative, largly impractical hunk of metal IRL. Don't want Zantetsukens and buster swords junkin' up the place.

Interesting filipino blade obsession, I spent a good portion of my highschool years with a filipino family. Lumpia & pancit all the way... balut not so much... anyway, SWORDS.

Sabres are amazing slashing swords, designed around that one motion, but they're one handed and quite front-heavy, making them awkward to sling when not on horseback or the like. The tip is double-edged, so it works for sticking as well, all in all a purposeful blade. I'd rather have a more utilitarian weapon though.

I'd love to have a sword myself, I'm too young to have one and don't have the money to buy one... yet :P I'm more of a katana lover than anything. But I also like other swords such as the Gladius. Of course there's always the fictional swords that I also love such as the Muramasa from Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven and the Buster Sword.

Then there's rapiers

Ornamental or not, I'd love to have a sword of my own :D

And zanta comes in for the screw-up! The crowd goes wild ahhhh... Anyways REAL SWORDS THAT EXIST IN REALITY, REALLY. I'm grateful lightsabers were left out THIS long at least. Interesting choice, by the way. Looks far to stylized but a wicked blade and sturdy grip. Looks to be late roman, indian influenced.

Also, realized Celtic swords fit well into my ideal type. They're not too long, so as to move quickly and stay balanced, deft, and could fill any roll a bladed weapon needs(stabbing, slicing, chopping)

I'm slightly surprised only one person has gone for a 2-handed sword.
Personally I wouldn't trade speed and the use of my other hand for the extra reach and power, but they're forces to be reckoned with.
Try a Zweihander, in some cases there would be an additional gripping space above the guard to help fighting in closer spaces, and the extra-long grip helped counterbalance the weight the extremely long blade produced.

It had to be done! Also, that was Alexander the Greats sword.

Alexander the Great?! Replica of his? I think I prefer the models of Chinese and Japanese swords compared to classic European medieval swords. Those look like they hit harder and all, but a swordsman skilled with a katana has better odds I think.

Are you trying to say a skilled man with a samurai sword would win over a skilled man with a european sword, or that a man with a samurai sword would just be better equipped for whatever came his way? Personally, I think a katana would be NO match for a gladius and shield. You can imagine some fancy slicing through the shield, but an experienced person would never fall back and hold it like a defense, they'd charge with it to close the gap made from a two-hander's longer reach, then follow up with a stab.

I dunno, the katana is a very strongly forged, absurdly sharp blade, VERY good at slicing motions, but I feel *martial arts kendo training* is highly overblown and overestimated due to mass media. Great for massacring peasants, hell to maintain, sharp enough to stand a chance against the woven plate armor of the time, and fast once a swing has started.

Just my take on the reformed and graceful vs. the utilitarian. A short, simple, balanced sword might not be much to look at, but it's got a sort of unscrupulous, no-nonsense deadliness that a graceful weapon can't possess.
