The series aired in Japan from January to December in 2010; there are twelve 50 minute episodes that aired on a monthly schedule. It's based on a series of light novels by Nisio Isin, author of the series Bakemonogatari. The amount of time given for them to work on each episode shows in the gorgeous backgrounds, good animation, and artistic character design. The art is what drew me to the series, and it continued to impress me further. The writing was good, and it frequently referenced other works and styles. Volume 1 (the first six episodes) will b released in America this July in a Bluray/DVD combo pack.
The series follows the swordless swordsman Yasuri Shichika as he follows the strategist Togome on her journey to collect the twelve perfected deviant blades forged by the legendary swordsmith Shikizaki Kiki. Adventure, love, loss, and learning fill their journey.
I highly recommend this series. It can get a bit emotional, but it is quite worth it. The art is a feast for the eyes, the music fits very well, and the story is well done.
