I'd love to play this game, and I'd buy it if I could secure an English edition, but I'm just wondering if I'll be able to play or if little ol' Amurekan me will have to learn some Nihon...ese?

just learn the katakana and hiragana characters. you'd be surprised how some of those japanese words in the game are just english words.
oh and memorize the japanese word for mushroom, it appears a lot.

Why can't more people be interested in the lame games I am? People who know both Japanese and English, as well as being able to patch, specifically. I'll print out a sheet of them fancy letters.

This game sucks, I honestly regret getting it. Was cool at the beginning, but then it got lame.

I r speaka dem both but my time is limited. This game was fun for the 2 weeks it takes to play. It is not for prolonged hunting nor is it that engaging. It is a very very rudimentary MH game which is what Capcom said it would be.
As for learning your nihongo, it helps for some of the prompts but not really. As I stated in my guide no one will ditch your village if you don't get something right. Just process of elimination and you're bound to get it right at some point. I think I also posted a link to a wiki someplace but it is all also in Japanese.
Short of turning this particular corner of the forum into a Japanese lesson then I would suggest just brushing up on the basics, your kana tables (both hiragana and katakana). My guide posted some Kanji for most of the characters if you need to know what they are.
My biggest recommendation though and this helps TONS is just to read manga. Get it in its original Japanese and get a series you can follow. I recommend Fairy Tail personally but Doraemon and One Piece work just as well. You will learn a ton of vocab and if you read it out loud from time to time you will improve your reading speed. Always get shonen manga though as those have the furigana side by side the Kanji. A huge benefit to those wanting to read. I confess that is how I learned Japanese here. Actually faster than reading textbooks and the rest was just supplemented with speaking with people, don't be afraid to make mistakes just go for it. Learning another language is a fun and worthwhile effort. I speak 3 myself.

I learned how to speak/read Russian by writing it in notes/reading books and keeping a table by my side (as well as a native speaker) so I'm sure that would work here. I'll try that; thank you.
