I know there is a general Tips and Tricks thread, but this thread is for gunning tips, tricks, and just for gunners to share their knowledge about guns. This is not a bowgun/armor combination thread. Feel free to post your own tips and I will add your post to this post here.

This thread is gonna be fun...

Normal Shots
Unlike the two other basic shots, normal shots focus all damage on one area. The exception is normal shot lvl. 3, which I don't recommend using. The reason is that when the shot hits the monster, it ricochets off the monster. Not only is it hard to land this, but you won't be focusing all of the shots power. Definately use Normal lvl. 2 as your main shot. It's easy to use, and you can make up to 400 additional through combining.

Pierce Shots
All shot lvl.s work in the same way. The shots go through the monster hitting it along the way. You'll want to use pierce on long monsters such as Deviljho and Agnaktor. Another tip for piercing is to have a short range. This way the damage done by pierce is done in shorter increments. Pierce does a certain number of hits, say 7. With a long range, if you shoot a Deviljho's chest, it may hit the chest 3x, and the back 4x. With a shorter range it may hit the chest 5x and the back 2x.

I'll add more stuff later...

PS3 won't let me post any longer than my last. I'll ask Hatter to merge em.

Pellets

Don't recommend using them... they suck... end of discussion. Jk, here's why they suck. No control of where they hit the monster. You hit your teamates, and they do like no damage.

Elemental Shots
Still great in Tri, there are 5 different types. Fire acts like a normal round, thunder, freeze, and water act like a pierce round, and dragon shots enter the monster and drop down, piercing along the way, making it easier to hit one hitbox. Definately use em on any monster. Just make sure you know what there weakest to

Sub Shots
Don't use em... just underwater pellets

Others
Exhaust Shots. Extremely useful. They exhaust the monster and do ko damage if you hit the head. Best used in rage mode. Slicing Shots, they won't be able to cut the tail alone, but they help and do good damage. Recov Shots, they restore ALOT of health to your teammates with lvl. 2 or rapid lvl. 1

Armor Skills

Normal Shot+, increases damage of normal shots by 10%
Normal Shot lvl All Up, adds 2 shots to all normal clips
Pierce Shot+, increases damage of pierce shots by 10%
Pierce Shot lvl All Up, adds 2 shots to all pierce clips
Element Attack Up, Elemental shots do more damage
Status Attack Up, makes it easier to inflict status
Combo Plus, every combination results in max result, ex. if normal lvl. 2 is 2-4, it will always result in 4
Bonus Shot, adds 1 shot to rapid fire, ex. if rapid fire for fire S was 3, it becomes 4
Load Up, adds 1 shot to every clip of your gun
Precision +1/2, reduces shot deviation

I added this to the OP, and made the OP a little cleaner by changing font sizes and putting everything in spoilers. Thank you for the contribution. :)

well pellet shots can be usefull offline say against monsters like Great Jaggi, Great Baggi, or Royal Luthdroth that bring a posse with them to a fight as it can be usefull as crowd control.

Could someone describe what things like Recoil and Deviation exactly do? I'm not english so don't really know what the words mean and what they exactly do, so i can't keep in mind when making a gun if it gets a high or low recoil or something. I've started to gun a bit, so far i can take on as far as a Rathian offline. (Have to start somewhere, and my gun set is atm focused on Normal Shots, using Posion Stinger, Devils Grin and Blizzard Cannon with a mix of Rathalos/Agna armor).

Recoil is basically the effect a shot has on your gun and how long it'll take for you to fire again, high recoil is when you shoot and you're pushed back and it takes time to shoot again and low recoil is when you shoot and you're not pushed back or affected in anyway and you can continue shooting rapidly, so clearly low recoil>high recoil.
Deviation is how the direction of the shot changes when being shot, so let's say you shoot a normal S, with deviation it may just move to the side, completely missing the monster. Deviation<No Deviation

high deviation will make your bullets not just going straight after they bend, they go straight even after they bend lol, i mean it, sometime the bended bullet go straight back into the dot sight again after being shot lol

low deviaton

IMO if you can handle deviation, its better to leave it alone, since precision skill require skill slot too, unless you have it along with the set

recoil is how hard is the push back of every bullet you shot, the higher it is, the longer you recover to shot another bullet

this is what you can shoot without recovering:
very high recoil, normals, elemental S (except dragon)

high recoil, normals, pierce lv1, elemental S(except dragon)

normal recoil, normals, all lvl of pierce, pellet lv1 & 2, status shot lv1, sub shots, demon S lv1, armor S lv 1, elemental S(except dragon)

small recoil, normals, all lvl of pierce & pellet, status shot lv1 & 2, sub shots, demon S lv1, armor S lv 1, elemental S, dragon S, clust lv1, clust lv2, wyvern fire lv1, WF lv2

minimum recoil, all shot :D

Well my current armor set has gemmed in Precision +1 from the charm (Precision +10 Protection +6, i added Divine Blessing cause i had slots open).

IIRC it has:

Steadiness +1
Normal S UP?
Normal All UP?
Heat Cancel (LO)
Divine Blessing
Critical Eye+2

Mixing Agna+ and Rathalos+

Either way, Recoil seems good, specially if you can gem it to +3

I'm really good with deviation so I almost always leave it on, the only thing that screws me up is going from low R to low L or high L to high R

The Normal Set I use is

Critical Eye+3
Normal Shot Boost
Heat Cancel Lo
Reload Speed+2
Bullet Limit

Bullet Limit? What's that for skill? Never heard of it.

Anyway, i still use my armor set but i switched Posion Stinger with Blizzard Cannon so i can also shoot Thunder and Flame shots, it barely chances anything to my Normal lv2 and 3 clips. Beat Rathalos offline in 15 mins now as well =D Gunning is so much more fun then i thought. I'm also working out a set mixing Uragaan with Bhnabra but it requires me a 3 slot gun sadly...which sucks cause that set would be a nice Status set (with Bombadier as well, which is nice for sleep bombing or something) but the only gun i can make with 3 slots right now can barely shoot anything with status effects ;s

Guess i need to get more gun parts and armor parts so i can mix better.

Well it's called Combo Plus in Tri

You know how almost every bowgun shot combination has a result like 2-4? With Combo Plus (Bullet Limit in every other game), you will always get the max result.

for rathalos, i think its better if you shoot normal's instead of elements
I AM NOT sure, but i find thunder element doesn't work wonder on los, since rathalos have average elemental defense but low to moderate raw defense
aim for the head or his balls, if you want to break his wing, use thunder S

element S are better used on parts that is weak to it & parts that when you melee with a hammer, with green sharpness, bounce
if it doesn't bounce, use other non elemental bullet

not true all the time tho, something like gaan can be easily killed with water S, but you need to aim to hit its balls & arms instead of his face

deviljho is really weak to pierce
barioth, average defense on all hit zone, so hit it with element S
lagiacrus, like bario, only worse, high defense on all hit zone

go to the FAQ on gamefaqs to get a better idea on what to use on other situation
