I feel that I've become a very knowledgeable person on the switch-axe. I'm pretty much brand new to the whole Monster Hunter scene and I jumped in when Tri came to the US. At first, it took me a while to get used to, even considered returning the game because it appeared to difficult...but I persevered. Upon gaining the Bone Axe, it became much easier fore me to survive the Monsters. Great Sword is too slow for me and everything else was way too complicated to figure out, except for the Long Sword and Shield n' Sword. But, the one weapon I've become very well acquainted with is the Switch-axe. I've learned much from my friend, who has been playing the games since Monster Hunter, and he says the Switch-Axe was much too complicated for him. He was even impressed at how easily I learned Combos and...when not to use an Uppercut in the online missions. >.> DODGING became a big step for me too, seeing as I was so used to the Shield and Sword that everybody starts out with.

So, if you have any questions on the Switch-Axe, I'll answer them for you as best I can. I'm not being concieted, I'm just lending a hand to people. (Also, I feel I should make my own thread about something and this was the first thing to come to mind.) :P ASK AWAY, FELLOW HUNTERS!!!

Please try not to double/triple post.

As for a question, what do YOU consider to be the best combo for a Switch Axe? I normally go with the uppercut followed by the stamina attack, but I'm open to variety.

I ALSO consider myself quite knowledgeable in the Switch Axe, and rather prefer it to any other weapon in Tri (although at times I'll use a Lance or SnS).

I try to avoid the "Massacre" attack unless the enemy has fallen over, since it's difficult to get out of. My favorite combo is the normal one that just goes X-X-X, except when I get to the uppercut attack, I pause for a second and start over so I don't initiate the Massacre by mistake. I use the forward-thrust if I have to close distances.

Although if you really must know, my favorite combo is the Sword-Mode combo. I give the ol' one-two slice, and immediately follow up with the Sword Burst. >Bl

... Didn't mean to hijack your advice threat, Krayden. I just love the Switch Axe so much...

I like using the sword-mode combos too, but I always find myself using the axe-mode more.

The stamina attack is quite effective against stunned/trapped/knocked over enemies and it's always annoying when you start the combo and your opponent just moves away..

Yeah. It's always fun to land a Massacre attack on a monster that's fallen over, or caught in a trap or stunned, etc...

And, yeah. Of course we end up using the Switch Axe more, but I like to get in as many Sword hits as I can, since I use the Barroth Axe, and it has paralysis Phial.

Uppercut's good and all, but it's a very slow recovery from it. Best thing to do is to what I call the Switch combo. You jab the axe forward then immediately switch to the sword. Time it right and it'll go from an axe jab to a sword swing. you can follow it with the second sword swing, which if also timed correctly can be returned to the axe in another attack. (I hope it's understandable.) This combo can actually be inserted into any combo to make for longer streams of hits and slices. You can even switch it up a bit by adding more swings in the sword mode, even though it's just a repeating pattern of left and right or even finishing it with the sword mode special, which I enjoy calling, the Phial Stab instead of the move to return it to axe mode in an attacking blow. (I hope all of this makes sense.)

Barroth is great for Paralysis and all, but the best bet is a weapon with Affinity boost effects. The Barroth series actually REDUCES the affinity.

One thing to note is that vertical attacks on the SA usually do more raw than horizontal, and axe mode has more raw power (depending on the vial) than the sword mode. I am not a fan of SA, probably because a large proportion of them are the people with a set that gives all negative skills that looks cool, and the people who just suck at the game. Atleast they are not using longsword and SOMEHOW HITTING ME WHILE IM GUNNING

I got it, don't worry.

I never really find the opportunity to use longer combos such as this though. When the monster is immobilized in some way then it's great, but as for just performing quick 3-4 hit combos I can't seem to utilize anything except the stamina attack. Sword mode has decent combos and can string together, but the attacks are somewhat stationary. There is little movement in the attacks and you have to roll in order to play catch-up most times.

On another note, Krayden please stop double/triple posting. There is an "edit" button at the bottom right of your post. Use that for replying to multiple posts, instead of making a new post for each one. Please don't make me ask again ;)

I see you've fixed them. Thanks. :) I'll make sure to hold back on the multis. Just wish it would say I'm a Rathalos instead of a Khezu Whelp.
